Students to Begin ‘Capstone’ Ethics Course on Race in America

TAMPA—On Monday, April 12, St. John’s 8th grade students will begin a six-session Ethics capstone experience that will require them to use all they have learned so far to explore issues of race in America. This new, multifaceted ethics course will serve as a culminating intellectual experience that helps our children bring their ethical thinking to bear on issues that have once again come to the forefront of our national attention.

Ms. Ayana Grady, the Youth Minister at St. John’s Episcopal Church, will be co-facilitating the course and its discussions with Fr. James Reho. She has completed advanced training through the Episcopal Church on how to engage youth on these issues in a way that is positive, empowering and not grounded in any particular political stance or agenda, but in the Christian Baptismal Covenant. The Covenant calls us all to respect the dignity of every human being.

Students will be encouraged to celebrate their own stories, develop curiosity around others, engage in civil discourse, and think creatively about how to move into a future that provides peace, respect, and dignity for all people across the diverse landscape of America today.

Open Forum on Zoom for Parents March 23 at 6 p.m.

To introduce Ms. Grady and the curriculum, as well as answer any questions,  Fr. Reho will host an open forum on March 23rd at 6 p.m., for St. John's parents of 8th grade students. (St. John’s parents can attend using the Zoom link in the March 11th issue of Eagle’s Wings.) Parents are also welcome to contact Fr. Reho directly with questions.
